Description

Also known as Pimento berry or Jamaican pepper, allspice (Pimenta officinalis) is an evergreen tree and member of the Myrtaceae family. The tree, which can reach a height of 30 feet, is native to the West Indies and bears the familiar allspice berries. These berries are picked when before they are ripe, crushed and steam distilled to extract the spicy, warm allspice essential oil.

History of Allspice

A staple of many cuisines, allspice berries earned their moniker from their distinct flavor profile, which emits notes of clove, cinnamon, cardamom and pepper. In fact, it was first brought back to Europe from the Caribbean by Columbus when he mistook the berry for that of pepper. Allspice has gained significant popularity since its trip overseas, and is now primarily cultivated in Cuba, Jamaica and Central America.

Aromatherapy Uses

Bath & Shower

Add 5-10 drops to hot bath water, or sprinkle into shower steam before getting in for an at-home spa experience.

Massage

8-10 drops of essential oil per 1 ounce of carrier oil. Apply a small amount directly to areas of concern, such as muscles, skin, or joints. Work the oil gently into the skin until it is fully absorbed.

Inhalation

Inhale the aromatic vapors directly from the bottle or place a few drops in a burner or diffuser to fill a room with its scent.
