Description

Originating in the Mediterranean, bay laurel is an evergreen tree that ranges in size from small and shrub-like to tall and towering. Although the plant produces little blackberries, the source of its bay oil is its leaves, which are also renowned for adding flavor in cooking. The fragrance of bay laurel is notably herbal and camphoraceous with subtle fruit and clove notes.

History of Bay

A plant closely tied to world history, the bay laurel has appeared throughout the ages in considerably prominent ways. In ancient Greek mythology, the beautiful nymph Daphne escaped the relentless pursuit of Apollo by turning into a laurel tree, and the Romans celebrated the laurel as a symbol of triumph. Bay contains considerable levels of the compound cineole, while also imparting its signature fresh, camphor-like scent.
