History of Tonka Bean

Native to South America, tonka beans are the seeds of the kumaru (Dipteryx odorata) tree. These black, wrinkled seeds have a smooth interior and contain a compound called coumarin, which is to thanks for its aroma, which many compare to that of sweet woodruff (or baby’s breath flowers). There’s an old belief that tonka beans hold magical powers, and if you were to hold the seeds tight in your hand and whisper your wishes to them, then plant the seeds, your wish will come true as the new kumaru tree grows…
