History of Green Tea

Made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, green tea is considered the oldest used herbal tea in existence. It originated in China over 4,000 years ago, its minimally oxidized leaves being first brewed in 2737 B.C. during the reign of Emperor Shennong. It was brought to Japan by a Buddhist monk, which sparked the widespread use of this tea throughout East Asian cultures. While many people may thing Chinese and Japanese green teas are one in the same, they are different cultivars and are prepared differently. Chinese green tea leaves are pan fried or oven/sun dried to create an earthy taste, while the Japanese counterparts are steamed, creating a leafier flavor.
